SUMMARY:Forty Years of Change in a Serpentine Grassland, a talk by Lauren Hallett
LOCATION: Zoom registration: www.cnps-scv.org/npls-20240208
DESCRIPTION:\nZoom registration: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwuce2spz4qE
tJfI-9iP1_BVneCmErf0Vdw\nSerpentine grasslands support a relatively high pr
oportion of California’ endemic plant diversity, providing a colorful displ
ay every spring. Which species – and which colors – we see every year are h
ighly variable. Here Professor Hallett shares findings from 40+ years of an
nually observing species composition in a serpentine grassland at Jasper Ri
dge Biological Preserve ‘Ootchamin ‘Ooyakma. She describes how gopher distu
rbance and climate variability generating a shifting mosaic of species abun
dances over space and time. While serpentine grasslands have largely resist
ed invasion by non-native grasses due to their harsh soil conditions, she o
utlines how atmospheric nitrogen deposition, especially in conjunction with
high rainfall years, can facilitate invasion into the system. She will clo
se with a discussion of management options to maintain serpentine plant div
ersity into the future.\nLauren Hallett is an associate professor in the Bi
ology Department and Environmental Studies Program at the University of Ore
gon. Her lab aims to produce “usable” science to improve ecosystems.\nThis
talk will be live streamed on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/ (https://ww
w.youtube.com/)@CNPSSantaClaraValley - registration NOT required) and Zoom
 (https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZwuce2spz4qEtJfI-9iP1_BVneCmErf0
